CLUBHOUSE UPDATE, Aug 14/16
Surrey Parks and Recreation Facilities Dept are currently in the process of completing the detailed design of the field house project. A meeting between the Facilities Dept and the Building Dept is scheduled for the week of Aug 22/16 to discuss the application process for building permits. Completion and agreement of the detailed design is expected to be completed prior to submitting building permits for approval. The scope of work and associated building permits being discussed will be for the full completion of the lower level (washrooms and changing rooms) and completion of building envelope only of the upper floor (clubhouse room). Completion of the interior of the upper floor will be left to the responsibility of Bayside as a tenant improvement.
In addition, the P & R Facilities Dept have identified and designated an in-house Construction Manager to oversee the construction of the field house through to completion. This will have a significant positive impact on reducing building costs.
A meeting with the Facilities Dept regarding the building process is hopefully to be arranged for the week of Aug 29/16. At that time, further information will be available regarding obtaining and implementing the use of in-kind donations. We will also have more insight into the building process, and possible timelines for the project.
Donations In Kind:
In regards to donations in-kind, Surrey Parks and Recreation Facilities Dept have indicated they wish to capitalize on all opportunities to bring value to the project. At this time they have strongly encouraged Bayside Athletic Association to start taking a hard look at our opportunities for in-kind contributions to the project. A complete set of drawings may be available by the end of Aug/16. As mentioned, Bayside will be asking for more direction and detail on the obtaining and implementation of donations in kind.
Shortly after the release of the completed set of detailed drawings, the P & R Facilities Dept will be requesting Bayside to confirm our in-kind donations and determine which divisions of work will need to be opened to a competitive bidding.
We have had previous donors supporting the project and we will be following up with them to inquire about their current status. In addition to these supporters, there has been significant others offering assistance. I would like to encourage all those in support of the project to give serious consideration to identifying how they or someone they know may be able to provide donations in-kind to the project. Please forward your support or information to myself, Stephen Black at stephenblack60@gmail.com, or Jonathon Boughen at jbghn@yahoo.ca.
We hope to organize a supporters meeting and an open house shortly after the meeting with P & R Facilities Dept during the week of Aug 29/16. We will continue to provide updates as more information is forthcoming.
We would also like to encourage everyone to continue to contact the Mayor and Councillors to keep this project in the forefront.
Patience and Perseverance will pay off!

Many phone calls were made with an attempt to get a decent size squad down to play the NOBS in Seattle, and finally 15 brave SOBS met early at the park and ride to take on the challenge. As is normal protocol, the team had our usual stop at Dennys in Ferndale for a good hearty breakfast to make us all run slower. One vehicle was missing with over a third of the team, as they had to pay a visit with US customs and immigration at the border, to sort out a few outstanding and previous issues.
After a good fill, we all set off on a beautiful sunny morning down the I5 towards our destination, only to see the clouds roll in and just like last year, pulled into the parking lot in a down pour with no changing rooms in sight. Nigel and Terry, both frequent players over the years with the SOBS joined our ranks, as the NOBS had 31 players.
It rained, the sun shone, there was wind, there were clouds and both teams settled down into a competitive match and although totally outnumbered, the SOBS managed to put together a decent display of attacking and running rugby. Both teams were back and forth and it was the NOBS whom had the earlier chances, only to be denied by some solid SOB defence. Finally some SOB pressure gave the backs some good ball and Jonathon, with excellent support play drew two NOBS backs, then to give Matt a reverse switch, which totally confused their backline and gave a nice hole for him to crash over the line for the games first score. The NOBS came storming back with an open field play, which had their backs move the ball swiftly up the field and their fly half, Aaron went under the posts.
The score was tied at one each at half time and the second half was a repeat of the first, pretty even play, attacking thrusts from both sides, strong tackling all around, in particular from the SOBS Tom Graham. The NOBS took the lead with another end to end play resulting in a nice score and then great ball from the forwards, enabled the backs to send the ball down the line to find Nigel, whom was able to out pace his opposite number in the corner to tie the game 2-2.
And then, Drama !
The SOBS were attacking, building a nice series of moves from midfield. A ruck 10m out from the goal line, the ball spread to the right and the backs froze the NOBS winger with a dummy to the inside and then a popped pass outside to Ian Stagg. He had one step to make, and then fall over the goal line for a score in the corner. However, the NOBS fly half, Aaron had other ideas and came charging over and claims he did not see the RED shorts and levelled Ian, driving him 3-4 metres into touch. Luckily Ian was OK, but took early retirement, and the ref made the only decision all day that everyone agreed with – Penalty Try !!
The NOBS got one back from their big charging prop and tied the match at 3 – 3.
Some heroic gentlemen had bought a couple of coolers full of beverages and both teams reminisced on the sidelines for a while, before heading for the Post Doc function. The NOBS selected Ian Stagg as their man of the match and the SOBS chose the speedy full back Shane, with Richie presenting a special award, a copy of the law book, being presented to Aaron for his illegal actions on the field. The SOBS enjoyed a couple of hours with the NOBS knocking back some very strong ales, before setting off back up the I5.
Another great day for which rugby was the winner.
Cheers

The SOBS travelled to Victoria to face the Ebb Tide on a beautiful Sunny spring day and managed to scrape together a decent squad of 22 players to take on an always very difficult opposition, especially in their back yard.
Prior to kickoff, the SOBS presented Randy with his black shorts, as he was celebrating his 50th birthday, and there was a moment of silence for the Ebb Tide, whom had recently lost one of their own.
Both teams looked evenly matched and for the first ten minutes was back and forth, until the SOBS moved the ball quickly down the wing and Randy laid a perfect little chip ahead to keep the ball alive of which landed nicely into the hands of Ben, who then strolled away from the opposition and scored under the posts. The Ebb Tide continued to apply pressure and were in fact looking dangerous and lobbed a high up and under for which Robert collected and then in return tried one of his own kicks which went sideways, but somehow managed to land in the hands of winger Navi, who took off down the field to score in the corner. Back came the Ebb Tide again and this time they scored with their powerful N0.8 and captain, whom seemed to be involved in everything. Much to the delight of the SOBS, the whistle was then blown for half time, with the SOBS holding onto a narrow 2-1 lead.
For the first ten minutes of the second half, the Ebb Tide used the slight down hill slope to their advantage and pinned the SOBS down in their twenty two, but the defence held out and the forwards won a good steal on the lineout and the SOBS broke loose and moved the ball down to the wing and Navi was able to skip by his opposite number and go all the way to score for his second. The Ebb tide started to run the ball more, but some stellar defence by the SOBS midfield created a knock on, and Robert was able to pickup the ball and head for the try line and score for the first time in his short illustrious career with the SOBS. Back the Ebb Tide came again and used the bottom corner effectively and after a couple of crashes which were held up by the SOBS, finally breached the try line to score their second. The SOBS kept going and a nice back line move enabled Satoshi to get away and make some yards and after a beautiful back flip pass found Matt in support, whom chipped ahead and used his soccer skills to somehow out run their prop for the touch down. The final whistle was blown and the SOBS came away with a hard fought 5-2 win.
Afterwards, everyone adjourned to the historic James Bay clubhouse for a nice feast and the man of the match were awarded, and the Ebb Tide chose Satoshi whom managed to almost side step the whole team at one attempt. The festivities continued and Randy had to suffer with lots of shooters, because his wife wanted to make we sure didnt take care of him. Richie, being the responsible captain was seen pushing him onto the ferry using a wheel chair, but apparently Randy was claiming he had injured his foot during the game. The boys behaved themselves so well, that the Captain of the ferry, Rick Klatt invited the team up to the bridge for short tour. Finally, as is tradition, a stop was required at the Rose and Crown for Beers and wings.
Yet another fantastic road trip to the island
Cheers

The SOBS welcomed the Snowcaps from North Vancouver, whom very kindly agreed to move our April fixture to a Saturday, so as to be part of the Bayside Club Day. To get everyone in the rugby mood, It was nice to be able to watch the Bayside ladies game, who won 34-0 and also some of the Bayside men’s game, which ended in a draw.
Due to the fixture change, the Snowcaps only showed up with thirteen players, so we gave them four of our own, two of which were from the front row, which enabled to have contested scrums. Many thanks to Tony, Ram, Robert and Ian G for helping them out. The game itself started in pleasant sunny, but cold weather and this enabled the SOBS to get quick ball from the forwards and the backs were able to move the ball wide on several occasions, resulting in two early scores from Ian Gendal and a sniping run from the back of the scrum by Greg. The snowcaps got one back to keep the game close, but then both Glen and Rich crashed over line and the SOBS took a 4-1 lead going into half time.
As the second half kicked off, the dark clouds that had been lurking close by opened up in the form of wet snow, so the fairly large crowd whom had been supporting all the games, suddenly disappeared and the game got a little sloppy for ten minutes or so due the nasty conditions. The snowcaps seemed to adapt to the change a little better and got the first score after half time and for a while it looked like they might have mounted a comeback, as kept the SOBS down in their twenty two for a period of time. However the SOBS would prevail and again some nice slick handling in the backs, sent Andrew Fiddis charging up the touch line and was able to make it to the try line. Final score SOBS 5 Snowcaps 2.
Afterwards everyone retreated to a packed house at the rotary to enjoy the after match festivities and a special big thank you to the Bayside ladies, Shelley, Robyn and Paige for preparing and serving the food for over 120 players and also to Ian and John for running the bar. The man of the match awards took place and the Snowcaps chose Mark Kempton.
The rotary clubhouse remained open late and then after, many members both young and old, attended the Bayside mini fundraiser party, hosted by the Town Hall pub. This was a very successful event and raised $2,400.00 towards the mini rugby programme.
Another great club day and rugby was the winner !
Cheers
